Hi everyone,
I'm new to these boards but have been a long time fish keeper. I currently have a 220g CA/SA cichlid tank, 72g discus tank and a 90g saltwater. I have been debating for about a year about taking down the saltwater tank and doing something else with it. I have never really been happy with the tank and I think I'm finally ready for a change and for some new fish I've never kept before. So the plan is to take down the 90g and clean it really well. It is drilled with a homemade 30g sump.

I was thinking about trying this for the tank once I get it clean and back up and going.

3 Uara
5-6 Geophagus Tapajos (or another similar non aggressive Geo that will stay around 5inches)

Will these fish get along? Is this too many fish? I'm completely new to Geophagus, so any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
jgentry

the stocklist sounds great for a 90 gallon but you might want to leave out just 1 uaru, I've heard bad things about keeping 3 together. Should be a pretty cool tank.

When I got my Uraus the lfs was seperating the rest because of aggression

I have mine with a bunch of severums, and loaches, and the uarus are nice to everyone but each other. Its weird how mean these things can get. When I got them I expected them to be nice like severums.

Thanks for the replies. Maybe I should buy a group of 4 or 5 uaru's and let 2 pair off and get rid of the others. I had heard that they liked to be in groups, but I guess 3 is not really a group. Are they kind of like discus, in that you should either keep a pair or a group of 6 or larger? Do Uaru pairs act aggressive toward other tankmates?

Thank,
jgentry

If you get a breeding pair they could get a bit aggressive toward other fish. I have a pair (plus 3 other uaru) in an 80g and the pair lay eggs every couple of weeks and get a little grumpy, but nothing serious. The eggs are always eaten over night, might have something to do with the 8 5-6" clown loaches... ;)

I wouldn't recommend three, either get a pair or 4+. Even a pair doesn't always work out, a friend had to separate his two at around 7" because of aggression.

your stock list sounds good but i think it will work better if you get the 4-5 and let them pair off. when they are smaller they really need to be in groups.

i learned out that 3 uaru are a bad ideal. i had 6 and sold three well then 2 of the tree started picking on the the third now it is all a mess that i still have not been able to fix.

uaru are great fish and worth the work. i love them and will probally always few a few.

uaru are fairly passive aggressive towards other species but can be bruisers between eachother - best to keep a single specimin in a tank that size, I'd say minimum of 180 if you want to keep a school of them. Temprement of a discus with other fish, temprement of a severum between one another.

Remember Cichlids have their own personalities. One of my Severums is an absolute lunatic, for example.
