Theyre cool fish, one of my favorite cichlids. $35 is crazy for a 1" fish. At my lfs they're $15 for a 3 incher. They arent agressive and I think they're calm enough to live with a payara. They are agressive eaters though

Awesome fish, one of my favorites, they will be fine with a pyara, i actually have an armatus grow out with my panda urau at the moment no issues. 35 is a bit high but they arent that common so not crazy.

Obviously at 1" you won't be able to sex them to get a "pair", though unless you end up with two males that take a strong dislike to each other (it happened to a friends pair and they had to be separated, on the other hand I had two females that would regularly "spawn" and guard the eggs together) you should be ok regardless of sex.

75g is about the bare minimum IMO for a pair, so I'm not sure how they'd get on with the payara, especially if they do breed for you. The other concern is if you're feeding meaty foods like shrimp to the payara they will more than likely go for that first instead of eating their greens, which isn't really that good for them. They are great fish tho, one of my favourite SA species.

Veggies Veggies Veggies... they will eat meat greedily but it isnt great for them and can lead to hith. Start with spirulina flakes then go to a good spirulina pellet. For treats i give them zuchini strawberries romaine letuce...

treat em right and you can wind up with a nice pait like these!!!

I fed mine a mix of NLS pellets, Hikari cichlid excel and spirulina flakes, and occasionally cos lettuce. Oh, and wood. Yes wood, they will eat your driftwood. I'd say it's a must to have wood in their tank, and don't be surprised if your lovely branchy manzanita is reduced to stubs in a fairly short time! AFAIK the NLS has a fairly high amount of fruit/vege matter so it should be fairly good for them. I know people use it as a staple diet for their Panaques which require just as much if not more roughage.

I've never heard of a meaty diet causing HITH [though I know it can cause other problems], but I should add that they are prone to it if kept in hard water. IMO if you can't provide them with softer water they probably aren't going to thrive.
