Hello,
I thought I would share some poor quality pictures I took today.
Tank Setup:
180 gallon 6x2x2
Loaded end to end with Malaysian driftwood
Temp 85-86
1 25-35% water change per week
Fish:
10 wild Uaru fernandezyepezi. Aquired from Oliver Lucanus at Belowwater on April 15 of this year at 1.5 to 2 inches. Now averaging 5 inches.
6 wild Cliethracara maronii (keyhole cichlid). Aquired in March of this year.
1 juvenile pleco, L368 I think, can't remember.
Fed twice per day, mainly vegetable matter.
Philosophy:
As you can see, the tank is set up for the fish first, and me second. I want these fish to be 100% comfortable and stress free so I give them what I can deduce from experts on their habitat. The driftwood and regular but infrequent water changes help the ph stay below 6 and lower, as well as keeping the water very soft. I am lucky to have soft neutral water from the tap.
Contrarian view:
I do not believe it necessary, or particularly advisable to do more than 1 moderate water change each week. Starting with a large capacity tank and not overstocking it goes a long way to maintaining harmony. Constant tank parameters are paramount with these wild Uaru IMO.
