Hello,

I thought I would share some poor quality pictures I took today.

Tank Setup:

180 gallon 6x2x2
Loaded end to end with Malaysian driftwood
Temp 85-86
1 25-35% water change per week

Fish:

10 wild Uaru fernandezyepezi. Aquired from Oliver Lucanus at Belowwater on April 15 of this year at 1.5 to 2 inches. Now averaging 5 inches.

6 wild Cliethracara maronii (keyhole cichlid). Aquired in March of this year.

1 juvenile pleco, L368 I think, can't remember.

Fed twice per day, mainly vegetable matter.

Philosophy:

As you can see, the tank is set up for the fish first, and me second. I want these fish to be 100% comfortable and stress free so I give them what I can deduce from experts on their habitat. The driftwood and regular but infrequent water changes help the ph stay below 6 and lower, as well as keeping the water very soft. I am lucky to have soft neutral water from the tap.

Contrarian view:

I do not believe it necessary, or particularly advisable to do more than 1 moderate water change each week. Starting with a large capacity tank and not overstocking it goes a long way to maintaining harmony. Constant tank parameters are paramount with these wild Uaru IMO.

x2 I agree.
Your fernands are beautiful! I am super jelous, this is one of the "holy grail" fish for me and the wife. I have been waiting for your group to pop up here on MFK. Your obviously taking very good care for them. Your lucky too for having soft water out of your tap. Have you had any issues or signs of HITH with your group?

When are you going to let me come see these in person? ps - the FX5 you sold me is working out great, thanks! need that pump now too (sorry for the derail)

Justin-

very nice...i too is looking for these pescados

Nice Uaru f's, love those guys. Nice to see more people working with these.

As for the w/c's I agree, if 25-35% keeps your nitrates in check that's fine. I've noticed that at least with my fish a really big w/c tends to put them out of sorts for a few hours.
