I have 2 uarus one is 8" the other 6.5". They have been together since I saved them almost a year ago. The smaller one from time to time will beat the bigger one up. it happens in a day. one day they will be friends and swimming around happy the next the big one is a mess. He always gets better.

Get this the little uaru is trying to still beat up the bigger one and my 8" Severum is guarding the big one. not bothering him but the severum chases the little mean one away from the big one. The Uaru is safe because the big has his back severum.

All other fish are nice and getting along its just this smaller uaru has a nasty streak. could it be a frustrated female that wants to mate?

This is not the first time the little one beat up the big one. Should I separate them? Most of the time they are friends and swim together. what's up with that? They act like a pair falling in and out of love.

I wouldn't separate them, it just seems like they might be trying to pair off and especially if the sevs protecting him all is good. Its crazy to see how they interact with each other

It is amazing how they have relationships in a way. I don't know the sex of my uarus but the size differance makes me think male and female. They just look like male and female I know it's really hard to sex them but I just have a feeling. Yet they never have spawned but there are too many others in the over stocked tank. Gosh I need a bigger tank.

 don't we all. I need to upgrade filtration for my uaru colony. Im going to get another eheim 2215. I have 7 uarus. Just bought 5 juveniles yesterday and i have a pair breeder size.

These fish are all crazy. My green severum is in his corner fighting a plant. the Uarus seems to have made up there was a little chasing but then they are sitting side by side in their corner almost looks like they are working on something. yup they are guarding that litle area and acting really weird. not like they are sick of stressed. But i just can not tell what they are doing.

What do Uarus act like when they are going to spawn ?

^ It sounds like spawning behavior. Most SA cichlids will stake out a territory and guard it prior to spawning. Are they mouthing/cleaning objects, and have their colors changed? Their eyes should get extremely bright orange/red and the body should darken a bit. You can also look for the female's tube to drop if she's preparing to lay eggs. It usually shows up a couple days before the actual spawn.

No they are not cleaning anything the color is the same. They are just so weird these fish. They are back to normal swimming together and staying close to eachother. No spawning.

Uaru are shoaling fish and you only have two. They've probably been together their whole lives. Even if they're not a pair, it's not weird for them to stay close. You'll see squabbling because like any cichlid they will disagree with each other sometimes. If you had a group of four to six, the aggression would be more evenly distributed, just like discus.
