Picked up a couple juvie Uaru a few months ago. Admittedly, I don't know a ton about them. Once last week and again today they have dug out a spot in the sand next to a small piece of driftwood. Is this typical behavior? Possibly breeding behavior? 0102171456-1.jpg 0102171455-1.jpg

Normal behavior after settling in. Not sure if they are sexually dimorphic.

I assume like most of the cichlids I appreciate (severum, chocolates, festivum, geos etc) they won't show much of anything unless vented or a fairly aged specimen.

From what I've read, that does seem to be the case. Just found it interesting they were making crop circles in the sand together and then pissing each other off 2 hours later lol. But then again, the years I've been into the hobby, I've spent very little of it keeping cichlids of any sort.

I wouldn't call these juvies at this point. They have their adult coloration. Spawning does not always mean a pair is compatible, or that they'll stay together as a pair. Sometimes fish will spawn once and then try to kill each other when they realize they're not a match. It could be that the female is not quite ready to lay and the male is hounding her.

Keep an eye on them and if one starts getting beat up be prepared to remove it or divide them. Hopefully they'll calm down.

There is no visible sexual dimorphism in Uaru.
