I didn't want to hijack the severum picture thread after peathenster's request for more pictures, so I decided to start a new one.
First, a little background on them. I got these fish at the beginning of April 2009 from Mark at RMC Aquatics. They were bred by Dale Jordan in Canada. These are the same Uaru sp. 'orange' that Jeff Rapps was also selling. They are apparently the first F1s to be made available here in North America. Dale's parent fish were both wild-caught.
Here is a video of the babies in April. They were "thumbnail" sized, barely an inch long:
[YT]<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/txlhYNXV5WM&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/txlhYNXV5WM&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>[/YT]
Now all seven fish are about 5" long. It's very obvious that they are not the same as regular Uaru amphiacanthoides. These pictures are untouched in Photoshop. I wanted to show off the real deep orange chest on all of them.
I treat these fish like my discus -- I've been growing them out in a bare bottom tank with daily water changes and lots of different foods. They eat everything -- blood worms, mysis shrimp, beefheart, ONF2 cubes, ONF1 & ONF2 flakes/pellets, algae wafers, fresh veggies (Romaine lettuce, cucumber, zucchini)... you can see that they've also gnawed my sponge filter to hell.
Two of the seven went into my 150 with the severums. The rest are still in the grow-out tank.
To be honest, I'm contemplating getting rid of them. They seem to be developing small pinhole-sized spots on their foreheads that look like HITH. I had the same problem with my F1 U. fernandezyepezi and I could never figure out the cause. I know it's not because of dirty water or lack of nutrition. I've also treated for hex and it hasn't helped. My guess is maybe my water isn't soft/acidic enough?
If anyone else is raising out the oranges, I'd love to see some pictures and hear your experiences with them. I love them but the signs of early HITH really bother me. It's especially troubling when none of your other 32 cichlids have this problem (including discus). Anyone want some orange Uaru?
