Can anyone tell me what type of Uaru this is? U. amp. U. cf amp orange or U. fern?

It's only about 2" TL the orange stomach is throwing me off I think is amp but could be cf amp orange too. I doubt it's a fern.

It is not a fern especially at 2 inches... maybe orange... grab it! Let me see if i can dig up pics of my maps and ferns when they were babies

It's amphiacanthoides. My orange usually did show a peach-colored belly at a small size. It spread into their entire chest as they grew.

It used to be said that the black triangular blotch on the orange Uaru didn't reach all the way to the caudal peduncle, while it did on the typical amphs. If you go look at the recent pictures from Jeff Rapps of the adult Uaru he imported from Rio Tapajos, their blotch stops short of the caudal peduncle and they have a more orange appearance. So either Rio Tapajos is the origin of U. sp. 'orange' or there are multiple sources of fish showing similar characteristics.

Ryan- any luck breeding the orange? it is the only on I do not keep and would love to get a couple

I sent mine to Peter (peathenster) in Georgia. I think he got several spawns but I don't know if they ever hatched. That's been five years ago, though, and I don't think he has the pair anymore. Mine were F1 from Dale Jordan's wild pair.

You can have a look at various collection points here: http://amazon-exotic-import.de/Gallerie/Cichliden/INDEX.HTM

Uaru sp. orange and Uaru amphiacanthoides 'Rio Tapajos' look very similar. Then again, almost all the collection points on this website show fish with varying degrees of orange in the chest. This is going to be another one of those examples of not being able to ID a fish for sure unless you have a collection point.

Thanks, I bought three of them @ $8.99 ea I couldn't pass on them.

That's a great price for any Uaru. I saw some locally on Friday that weren't even 2" yet and they were $17.99. I almost came home with all four because they swam right up to the glass and showed off that inquisitive Uaru personality. Unfortunately they had ich and I had no QT set up to treat them, so I left them there. :(
