I have a pair of young Uaru Amph in a 135g. They have been growing steadily, but I have some concerns about their diet. I was feeding them nls thera a, as well as some amounts of veggies. I no longer feed any vegetables because of the mess, and they are now getting earthworm sticks from Kens fish as well as nls algaemax. They aren't real interested in the algaemax and don't even seem to eat much of it. They do like eating geo eggs though that's for sure. How do I get them more interested in algaemax? Based on what I know they need a vegetable based diet. Any advice on proper nutrition for these fish is appreciated. I want to make sure they grow properly. I do frequent water changes, often daily because I feel like it.

Personally I would continue to give them fresh veggies. IME the fish really enjoy it. You don’t have to offer them vegetables daily but once or twice a week right before water changes might work out better.
Other food options will be more pellets Nls insectum and Hikari cichlid excel. You can also give frozen food if available Emerald entree and Freshwater frenzy (San Francisco bay brand) are good treats to include.

Yes. They definitely love vegetables. I am probably going to stick with cucumber now, as lettuce just makes a huge mess. Not sure what other veggies they can have, but my main focus is trying to minimize the amount of protein they get as I have heard they develop different coloration and don't grow properly if they get too much protein. Feel free to tell me that isn't true if it isn't.

You can give them cabbage, peas and zucchini also.
Not sure if it’s directly a protein problem but the only time IME uaru will have a problem is if they aren’t given enough plant based foods in their diet. I’ve kept them successfully when provided a diet of Hikari excel, Nls cichlid (insectum wasn’t available yet) fresh veggies, plants, and frozen food.

Although Uaru are omnivores, they are primarily herbivorous in nature as adults.
When young, foods like insect larvae, crustaceans are eaten, but the older they get, the more vegetable matter becomes important, as their digestive tract matures.
How large are they now?
They may still be in a more omnivorous period.

Interesting. They are about four inches, not quite with their adult coloration yet. They seem to be growing taller more than longer right now. What foods do you recommend that haven't been mentioned?

They are still not mature, so worms, and insect foods are needed with a smattering of veggies, but at 8-10" veggies become more important.
This species eats a lot of terrestrial veggies in nature that fall in the rivers, so leafy food like romaine, to thawed peas, to whatever they take to.
I feed these type primarily vegetarian cichlids everything from dandelions to excess aquatic plant trimmings, to hair algae I grow outside on rocks in ponds
