I have 3 wild uarus and they constantly chew on my drift wood making my tank have a constant mess of floating debris. Am I lacking there diet some where? Or is this just a habit of them? I feed earth worms, 3 different kind of pellets, flake, blood worms occasionally, green leaf lettuce, shrimp, algae wafers and a homemade bison heart mix I feed my discus(rarely). I like a vaariety of foods over the coarse of a week. I have over 1200 gph of canister filtration(est. after head loss) and its a 180gallon.

That's just uaru for you. They chew on and eat anything. They're like goats. If you have sponges on your filters, they will eventually gnaw those down, too. It doesn't matter what I fed mine, they always still chewed wood and sponges.
Keep plenty of veggies in there for them.

Agree 100% with Ryan. My Uaru (amphicanthoides) loved mopani wood. They leterally chewed every square inch, you could see the teeth marks. I actually liked that about them. They didn't seem to care much for any of the Malaysian DW with a large mopani piece in the tank. Maybe try that?

so true..Its funny that you would post this because my Urau's do the same thing and I'm always finding tons of chewed up driftwood all over the tank and at first I thought I was overfeeding.
I love it that my Uaru do this it cracks me up. Its just there thing I think they like the algae taste. THEY NEED GREENS more then any other cichlids. Make sure you feed them a good veggie based food Or grow them some feeder plants. have a bucket of duckweed or any other aquatic weed.
I have a veggie based pellet and I always put green leaf in the tank. My sevs love it and oddly enough my angels eat it as well. I wasnt expecting that from them. I also toss in zucchini a couple times a week. I forgot to mention that. What else do you guys feed yours? They do still chomp on the malaysian piece I have but not as much as the other stuff. They also took care of all the bba I had
