anyone ever tried this? I hate the sludge that builds up under an Undergravel filter so I havent used one in years but I was thinking what if you attached tubing to the uptake tubes and had it actually siphon over the back of the tank into a wetdry and then pumped back into the tank. Has anyone tried anything like this before? if so what was the result?

I thought about that. However I was going to put holes just below the waterline so if the waterlevel drops to low the syphon will be interupted and will stop automatically. like you to to the out take from a sump to keep it from doing the same thing.

you'd be a LOT better off plumbing the RETURN line from the sump into the intake of the UGF. The resulting reverse flow would not only allow a substantial BB colony to develope in the substrait it would also keep the substrait clean and suspend debris in the water to be picked up by the filter intake. A simple check valve would prevent a syphon from developing in the case of a power outage.

No good if you have a planted tank because all the stuff the plants need would be flushed out

Also when power came back on, the tank will have toi be able to hold all the sump's water when it's pumped out.
