so i placed an order with a usually reputable online retailer for a presumably longnose gar, well, it would have been great if it was actually a 10" longnose gar for $13....well it wasn't, clearly a different species, but no beef there, a 10" gar is a 10" gar, and for that price i cant complain.

o wait, yea i can

the fish is disgusting lets ignore the easily fixable fin rot, even then theres the issue of it missing an eye....

and better yet its covered in fish lice.....

like, in 17 years of fishkeeping, ive never seen a dilapidated fish like this, and ive seen some pretty f'ed up fish

so i called them up and theyre sending me a new one, free of charge (dayum right) but im afriad its gonna be the same condition.....well see tho

pics to come.....needless to say, im speechless

omg that is terrible if they send you the wrong one reture it and ask for credit fir fliters or food.

sorry to hear that man, unfortunately a lot of the Florida/spotteds that go through the suppliers these days are missing an eye and covered in fish lice...i've (unfortunately) seen a lot of this at various LFS. that's all aside from the mis-ID, which, i get quite annoyed with when it comes to gars...and mis-ID'ing a longnose gar is about as far off as one can get, since they are the most morphologically different from the rest of the family!

i'd pick off the lice individually, but also keep it in a tank with a full treatment of jungle parasite clear. water changes and salt should help with the fin rot, as well as some good food, which i doubt it was getting at the supplier. good luck and keep us posted--

yea, im used to the miss-ids, but was rather exited about maybe actually finally getting a longnose in my neck of the woods.....

yea, the finrot is an easy one, im definetly gona pick of the lice *shudder* and set him up a rubbermaid full of meds. i think of it this way, i get a free gar (a f'ed up one) and maybe a not so screwed up one on the way.

im still rather dissapointed, but what can ya do.

the hunt continues for a longnose in the west......

well, cleaned as many of the lice as i could find off....counted 14 big ones and like 20 smaller ones.....just gross

ill be heading out later tonight for the meds/salt to clear his fins up and take care of the rest of the lice....

i hope he doesn't mind a 10 gallon tank as a hospital for a few days....

sorry to hear about that man.. i would return it and get another one or get store credit..

Thats jacked up!!!!!!!!! Who did you buy it from, so I know not to order from... :)

so the replacement came today....which is good and bad

good is the thing is about 15"s long, has all its body parts

bad is its in just as bad condition, finrot, lice.....

i told them to just credit me back the cost of the fish + shipping which they did reluctantly.

so the final result is 2 gar (8+"s and 15"s) absolutily free

the smaller eyeless one will probably be euthanized or dontated to my buddy. im treating them both now for the lice and fin rot. hopefully theyll turn out alright after all
