So I'm at walmart and they had some fishies, so i looked at them and i saw this cute little fellow for only 4.73 and he was being kept with a bunch of freshwater fish, a few cichlids, and oscar and i like him a lot.... so i bought him. turned out too be a spotted puffer fish which apparently needs brackish water, im only set up for fresh water. can this little fellow survive in fresh water and for how long?

I'm starting to feel like i'm going to have to give the little guy up but I love him so much and hes such a little cutie.

the only other thing in the tank is a Peacock Eel (named melvin)

how long can a puffer live in fresh water

your best bet would be to get another tank and set it up brackish, it'd probably survive for a good while but that doesn't mean it's particularly healthy etc

Damn...wish a girl liked me like that..hahaha... can anyone explain to me what brakish water really refers to?

I understand salt and fresh water only

Brackish is Freshwater with some salt added to it. It's salinity is usually 1.004-1.006 for light brackish, I believe.

So, basically think of the areas between where rivers empty out into the ocean. Half fresh and half salt (this doesn't explain exactly, but should give you a general idea of what brackish water is).

It's not can they live in freshwater so much as is it healthy for them to. Your best bet is to read the info on this link, the Admin pufferpunk is a member here.

hope this helps

Brackish water is basically the mouths of rivers and deltas that lead into the sea. Mangrove swamps and estuaries are usually in brackish waters, and there are many fish, such as salmon, which travel from the sea up into the river, or from the river into the sea, such as the "Colombian shark".

It can probably survive in FW for a good while, but if you want him happy and healthy, your gonna wanna keep it brackish. Alot of LFS dont tell you this with these puffers, there are pure FW puffers, but thats not one of them. If you need an extra 10 gallon tank for a BW set up, let me know.

keep in mind if you want to keep this cute little guy to properly set up a tank as brackish you're going to want some marine salt mix to add, not just aquarium salt (Sodium Chloride).

Marine mix is largely chloride and sodium, but also magnesium, sulphur, calcium, potassium, and many other elements in far lesser amounts
