i am building a 6’ long 4’ wide and 2’ deep in the deepest part, maybe 2.5’ deep. It will be about 300-400 gallons which isn’t very big but I wanted to know what species of fish could I keep in there other then goldfish or koi. It rarely gets to freezing temperatures here and the pond never freezes over. Could I keep some gar species in there as I’ve heard they can handle freezing temps, maybe some Rudd of perch. Any suggestions?

Perch and rudd are ok but hard to view from above. 6x4 is a bit small for goldfish and way too small for koi. Fathead minnows are interesting fish that do well in small ponds, also stickle backs.

How many perch or Rudd would you recommend, and is a 6’ x 4’ really to small for goldfish as I think that that is plenty space and I know it is too small for koi

golden tench might also be nice. Gold fish will do well in a 6x4 but will do better in a bigger pond. Perch get pretty big and can become friendly but need a bit of depth to help them overcome shyness. Perch are also VERY predatory and become fat on smaller goldfish.

I have been looking on carpco.co.uk at maybe getting some blue or golden trout, they do a lot of other fish too

They do get big but if they out grow your pond get the frying pan out !!! They need a lot of oxygen so you would need a large pond pump.

Not sure on legalities but: bullheads, most sunfish, weather loach, paradise fish, many shiners are all worth looking into

U.K. its hard to get hold of them, I have been looking for channel cats for ages, hardly ever see them here
