Would like to hear your own experience with a combination of the two or preference over the other and what size you are filtering. Curious to see DIY ideas on how others are filtering with 800 to 3k gallons. Thanks.

I run a 75gallon sump k1 reactor dcp 5000 pump and ultima 2000 with a reeflo hybrid pump but...... I’m only filtering a 180 gallon aquarium please don’t flame me :jaw-dropp. Lol on serious note I plan on upgrading the tank wanted to make sure I had enough to filteration to handle something larger. Big tanks are expensive and big filtration is expensive so I chose to spend now on filtration and upgrade tank later. I also run a 110 gallon sump 2x jebao 12or15lph pumps don’t remember with a bunch of different media’s, a 21” sand filter stuffed with ultima 2 media (poor mans ultima) 1/3hp wlim pump 3kgph and a Rubbermaid trash can with k1 900gph mag drive pump on my 600 gallon overkill but it works flawlessly.

It aint a ultima but i run an econobead 60 and a sump for 1000L of water. Eb60 is mainly for keeping the water crystalclear the sump holds 180L of wter and almost 75L hel-x 13 and hel-x 17 media.

Here is my set up for the combo on my 180 gallon. I know there are others out there would like to see them as well. This was during water change this morning

Will post some pics later tonight if ill get the time to go down again to my local

My tank is not set up yet, and family illness prevents me from being home to work on the backgrounds in my tank. I plan to use an Ultima II 4,000/ReeFlo Barracuda gold pump/120 UV sterilizer to return the water from my 405 gallon sump to the main tank. The sump is for redundant filtration as primary biological filtration will be from the second Ultima II 4,000 drawing and returning water to the main tank and primary mechanical filtration will be via six RTL-100s run with one or two ReeFlo Hammerhead pumps. (One or two Hammerheads because my husband thinks two might make for too swift a current with the two Barracuda Gold pumps. I think our big guys will love the current)

Here is my setup of two 1000L ibc tanks connected with uniseals and pvc piping.

I run exactly what you asked about, an ultima 2000 and sump in line for my 450 ray tank it works great - I actually use a 90 sump and a submerged dc 20000 liter pump with the correct flow curve. It works great.

Only issue is I was setting up a second similar system and the ultima company, aqua ultraviolet, is giving me issues about making good on their warranty with a brand new ultima 2000.

If I understand this correctly, you are pulling water from the tank, through your Ultima filter using the Jebao DCP20000 in the sump? If so, how are you getting the water back up to the tank? just another DCP20000 pump?

Do most people put the Ultima before the sump? For some reason I always thought I would let overflow/gravity bring water to a sump. Then pull water from the pump - through the Ultima filter - back into the display tank. Maybe I've just been planning incorrectly? haha

Just did a little more research because I'm unfamiliar with the Ultima filter but am interested in buying one. Just realized the pump goes on the inlet side of the Ultima filter, so it pushes through the pump (in my previous reply I assumed it pulled water through the pump).

But I am still curious if people put the sump before or after the Ultima filter.
