Ok. I've read (and re-read) every thread about the Ultima II and Bio Wave filters. I'm currently setting up a 675 that will have mostly stingrays.

My question is, which one has better mechanical filtration for stingrays? I'm not worried about the amount of water lost during backwash or the cost, I'm trying to figure out if one is better than the other.

I think I've done too much reading...

The first question is who has both and can provide an unbiased comparison. Tough to say which is better as there are few who have one model, much less both. I’ve never owned a biowave but have owned many ultima filters and have loved every one of them. If costs and backwash is not an issue the ultima is at the top of my recommendation list.

kendragon kendragon probably has the best perspective. Not sure if you read the following thread but there is a lot of info. https://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/...iltration-and-evolving-with-your-fish.499111/

I think there is a difference between the biowave filters listed on their website and some others that are recommended. Kendragon.

The following thread is by a MFK member that actually used both. They decided to use biowave for mechanical and ultima for bio. Unfortunately they arent really active anymore.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by this. Are people using different BioWave filters than what's on their site?

I have read both threads you mentioned. Very helpful. I'm really trying to see how well both work at mechanical filtration. I'm leaning to the BioWave, mostly because that seems to be the con

I think there is a regular biowave and then a biowave BioGlass filter. The BioGlass is suppose to be better for mechanical (https://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/threads/ultima-filter-testimonial.698144/).

From what I have read is that most folks that experience mechanical filtration with the ultima is because they run the filter at a much higher flow rate than what is recommended by the manufacturer. Those that run it within is specs do not seem to take issue with the filter.

I never understood the BioWave and BioGlass were different products. Thanks for pointing that out. After doing some more reading, I'm leaning toward the Ultima.

Thanks for all the help.

With stingrays I would be more worried about bio, Also is an auto drip a possibility?
