I have a chance to pick up an Ultima II filter for dirt cheap and am trying to figure out a way to utilize it on my 265G aquarium. I do not have a sump, the Tank is Not drilled.

I do not want a pump inside the aquarium. Is there any external pump I could put under the stand with the Ultima that I could plumb in over the back of the tank?

Suggestions plz...

Mike

Which Ultima? Each Ultima has a recommended optimal, minimal and maximum flow rate.

Ultima II 1000 (500 - 1200 gph) Optimal flow 1,000 gph at 10' of head. Direct drive self priming pumps recommended. A Reeflo Swordtail pump would work.

Ultima II 2000 (1000 - 2500 gph) Optimal flow 2,000 gph at 10' of head. Direct drive self priming pumps recommended. A Reeflo Super Dart Gold pump would work.

Select a pump based on recommended flow rate of the Ultima you are considering buying. I gave examples of Reeflo pumps only because I like Reeflos. ...there are lots of other pumps on the market, just check the flow rate at 10'.

Sobyour thinking either of those pumps I could plumb hard pvc up 5.5' over the back of the tank and use say an FX5 strainer on a pipe for intake then through the filter and back up the back of the tank and they will prime themselves??

My concern is the plumbing and the rift pump for the job.

As for which Ultima. I'm not certain yet I have Togo look at it

When you know which Ultima it is, go to this site and read up on the filter. The specifications are very different for each model.

I am planning on placing a PVC pipe almost to the floor of my sump to return the water via an Ultima filter and UV sterilizer back to the main tank. If you have a bare floor tank, you could put two vertical pipes just off the floor to suck up debris (poop suckers) If you have substrate, the uptake/uptakes need to be high enough to not suck up substrate. IMO the lower the uptakes are placed, the better. In our 300 gallon tank, all we do is open two valves to drain the tank. Water coming through the poop suckers is diverted under the house and dumped outside.

Another consideration: Ultimas need to be purged. How do you plan to do that? Do you have a nearby drain? Or are you going to have to attach a hose every time you purge the Ultima? Purging is another reason to place your uptakes lower rather than higher in the tank....you can remove more water from the tank with lower uptakes. :)

The tank sits right above a drain in the basement... I was planning on running a pipe up through the floor with and s trap and vent... That way the Ultima has a designated drain for purging...

Thanks for the advice

Some people on MFK really like Laguna Max Drive pumps and hate Reeflos. I looked up the Lagunas, and none have the right specs (1000 gph at 10' head). You could call Aqua Ultraviolet up and speak to someone in technical support for their pump recommendations for the 1000 model.

Our Reeflo pump has run for 9 1/2 years and is a true work horse. During the first year of operation, I purchased a second Reeflo for a back up. It is still in the box.
