This is their last spawn from 16 days ago, about a hundred fry left (many have been sucked by the canister and overflow). Seem to be feeding on the algae growing on the rocks and leftover food from the parents, I also drop in a few powdered pellets and baby brine shrimp every now and then. The pair looks to be preparing for another spawn soon, I wonder if they will let the old fry survive as well.

Are you sure they have not started eating them. If that is not the case put a sponge around the intake.

theyve grown pretty solid. General's children right?

I usually cut a piece of foam and place it over my intake, so the pump still flows and fry don't get sucked up.

Yeah they are fry from the General.

The first time they laid eggs I covered the canister intake and overflow with pantyhose but it was a mess, it decreased the flow so much that the filters almost didn't work.

You can get a sponge and place it over the intake tubes. I'm referring to the sponges that they use for sponge filters that have the hole cut in the center. I have xp3 canisters on my umbee tank and just slide the sponge over the tube and its safe. Works great. Good luck with the spawns! My pair aren't showing any signs atm of spawning, gunna do a large wc this weekend and see if that helps. How big are your umbee?

His pair spawned a couple times while with me, so im guessing this is their 3rd or 4th time and with each time they become better parents. Yours will spawn again i promise;) and once they work out the bugs you will end up with more umbee fry than you will know what to do with:) LOL I used consistent water changes of almost every other day at about 25-30% vs one huge wc a week. after about 10 days of the constent wc's seem to get almost any of my fish spawning:)

^ That's right they have spawned twice with me (January 29 and February 22) but first time they ate the fry. The female already dropped her breeding tube today so I guess they will lay eggs sometime next week.

I haven't measured them out of the water recently but the male is around 6" and female maybe an inch smaller.

I'm glad they figured things out this time. You'll be bombarded with Umbee fry in no time. I really admire the color of a breeding female Umbee. It will be good to have quality fry like this spread around this area.

What kind of sponge do you use? I tried that once and it severely cut down the water flow. However, I probably did not use the right kind of sponge. I use netting now if I have babies in the tank and it is a very small mesh; however it will not really work all the time unless the fish is strong enough to get away from the pull of the intake tube. So know the kind of sponge you use would be really helpful to me.
Thanks!
