Well since no one posts in this section I'll post my Rio Mag umbee pair. Layed eggs on 3/26. Hatched on 3/29 and are free swimming on 4/3. Will post progress =]
It is a 75 gallon. The male is around 10" and the female is around 7". They will be getting a 180+ in a month or 2 as soon as I can clear out some of my smaller tanks to make some room in my fish room. And the 180 will not be a forever tank either since they will need something longer than 6' eventually. There are 3 filters in there 2 hob filters and a fluval 405. All 3 filters have the intakes covered =] if you zoom in you can see sponges on the hob's and some nylon on the canister. This isn't my first rodeo lol
Awesome. I love the look of the Umbees. I always enjoy the stories and pics of successful breeders. I have issues trying to get anything but Convicts to breed.
What's the plan with the fry?
I know a few local hobbyists that are interested in some. Other than that possibly try to ship some out once they get to the 1"+ mark. Unfortunately I'm sure I'll have to cull a good amount of these out. Not everyone wants a big mean beautiful cichlid that can potentially get 20"+. Going to leave them in with the parents for a few more weeks and then I've got a 55g grow out tank ready for them
This is true. I would love a few, they are beautiful fish, but don't have the room for a tank of the size needed for them. I can see how that would limit the amount that you would be able to raise up to a good size.
I wasn't trying to bash or to teach. I have admiration for your set up. I know umbee get big and thought wow looks like a small tank. Breeding what you love is the apex of fish keeping IMO. I miss breeding. Again, great job.
