I would like to hear some imput on breeding an umbee trio. ok so here are some quick stats. umbees relatively 8-11" 1-male, 2-females. what would my chances of them breeding in a 300 with or without dividers be? has anyone done this successfully? any pics? thank you:)

You could breed them in a 300 gallon tank. Personally I think the tank is too small for that particular fish. I would never chance it without a divider. Even with that, if one of the females engages the male, the lone female could take a beating. The divider, while necessary, will also pin the odd female on one side or another of an aggressive pair.

They are very rough on the females. I agree with Mo, don't chance it without a divider. If you want to try to use both females for breeding at the same time divide the tank 3 ways. Put the male in the middle and females on both ends. He can breed with both of them that way.

thank you everyone. Mo, i agree the 300 would be too small in long run. but should be good for a year. I have a couple larger tanks but not really friendly for divider set up it is a 540... so maybe i wont need a divider. I am planning a 3-way divider in a 300, male in middle females on ends with powerheads pushing currents over both areas so male can fertilize thru dividers. I am definetely gonna introduce without dividers to see how they take to eachother. ill have dividers ready. ill take a video of introduction:)

I still think anything is possible and would love to hear more of what everyone thinks.

Good luck. Anything IS possible. Cichlids don't go by a calendar. If it gets ugly it will happen quick and when you least expect. Just my personal experience...any fish I was willing to put time and energy into is an investment. I make sure all of my bases are covered and don't take chances.
