Umbees in 180?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I know Umbees get to 24+ inches and I've done extensive research so I am prepared to house them and care for them. My only question is how long can they thrive in a 180 gallon tank?

Depends on alot of variables. I have kept my pair from COA in a 150 for a year. In that time they grew from 6" male to 13" female from 5" to 9". I changed their water religiously 100% every week. Fed them 1 time daily and periodically skipped feedings throughout the week. They still grew fast.

A 180 would be the minimum I would keep a pair for life. A 30" from front to back would be ideal. A 180 will get you two years at least maybe longer I would say once he gets over 20" it's time to get a new tank.

These fish can't be truly appreciated in small tanks they should be experienced in massive tanks to get a idea on how they move in open water. Not everyone can provide accommodations like that. I can't currently but it does take time to grow them out.

I plan on providing them a larger tank in the future it's just at the moment a 180 is my only option. Thanks for the information!

I was also wondering about my 40" long 30" wide and 30" tall 150 tank for a single male specimen. how long would that last me, are they fast growers? There isn't much info on umbers on the internet so if I could be informed on there requirements that would be great

I would get a smaller species unless you've already got the larger tank. 40" length won't last an umbee long at all. Grow about an inch per month maybe a little faster depending on feeding etc
