Hi guys

I have a problem with my male umbie and i need some advice. A week ago i noticed that alittle of the flesh/skin of the mouth did not go all the way back on the mouth-inbetween the lips and the head, maybe called the mouth extension, not sure.

He seems too fine and he's, eating very well. I have added some anti-bacteriel just incase . The mouth seems to be the same.

My question is, should i be worried, is it normal for some cichlids to have some disfigurement as they grow. Also could it be the eggcrate that seperates him and the female fault, i have read some threads that eggcrates can cause mouth injures. If this is the reason will it be ok for his mental wellbeing if i remove the female and the eggcrate? I brought them as a pair a year ago, male 13 and female is 7inch.

I can't provide any pics. Thanks for reading , any advice will be great.

My umbee's mouth became distended and it eventually killed him. Without a photo it's practically impossible to identify anything, and even then it's pretty iffy. I'm not saying your fish has what mine had.

I got this info after he died.

I have seen this on umbees several times, and I don't believe it injured itself on the egg crate.

Unfortunately, once the mouth/lips get that distended, then there isn't much hope for the fish.

If you catch it early enough (you will see a slight swelling of the mouth area before it starts to eat away holes around the lips) you can stop it but not necessarily cure it 100%. Umbees and festaes, IME, are very susceptible to this disease. I believe the white stringy feces in secondary.

The only thing that really worked for me (and I've tried a lot of different solutions) was a very diligent treatment with Furan 2 or Bifuran, basically a mixture of Nitrofurazone and Furazolidone.

It wouldn't hurt to try, but you have to do it everyday, with water changes daily.

Good luck.

modest _man thanks for your reply, i read your thread from before, can i ask how long the swelling was there before you saw signs of infection?

more ideas how to deal with mouth infection would be great. By the way I live in the uk where you can't buy ant-biotics over the counter.

thanks guys

I noticed it about three weeks before he died. It got worse and worse over the course of the three weeks until it was fully distended. It started as a dark mark like a bruise on his lip.

I had the same thing affect one of my Beani and it took 2.5 days to kill the fish and I used the Furan-2 meds.

Rapps told me to also try using a combo of clout and metronidazole with 1 cup aquarium salt to each 20g of water. I've always used Clout to great effect on a variety of things.

thanks guys for your repiles. What i did was remove the female and the eggcrate, clean the tank and filters and added some anti-bacterial med. Hoping for the best

Anymore i can do, let me know. thanks

This is a very common umbie disease. So far I haven't heard of a cure and it always kills in the end...

I have been keeping umbies over the last 4 years. This has killed 8 of my umbies and cost me around $1500. I have only been able to save one out of 9 from this disease and in my cases bifuran has only worked that one time only. If you look up Modest Man's thread about this same problem, thats exactly how all of mine looked. It makes me want to quit the hobby, very discouraging. I hope this is not what you have.
