Been having a nitrite issue for a few weeks now. It was over ten then I started doing twice a week fifty percent changes. Got it down to about two then was going to let it equal itself out naturally. Checked today, back at ten. Did an emergency wc. I'm stumped. I only have six fish in the 55 gallon. Dual biowheel filter. Haven't removed any structures in over a month. Ideas?

A couple of possibilities - test kit is no good or you are overfeeding the fish (don't feed the fish for a few days and see if your nitrites go down)

I likely over feed because my other tank I test is spot on. I had a feeling it was over feeding. Suppose ill put a feeder or two in the tank for my bichir and start their diet

I agree. How old is your test kit?

Maybe two weeks. It works perfectly on my other tank. Showing no nitrite and minimal nitrate

Ammonia is ideal and nitrates are forty to fifty varying

By ammonia ideal, you mean zero I hope. Just do water changes more frequently for a bit. A second opinion via another test kit is a good idea too

When u do a WC do u vacum the Substrate to remove excess waste from your fish to reduce Nitrate? I had that problem when i first started in Fish Keeping... you could cut back on your feeding if the fish are larger than 8"... Also you could add pothos to the tank they conusme Nitrates as well... I feed 3 times a week tues, thurs, sat nitrates stay around 40ppm in a week do a WC every Friday got 3 RTC X TSN, 1 RTC, 2 8" Oscars

check any decor and syphon your gravel. prolly some food rotting somewhere.
