I'm still doing research on sw rays, and I came across two that might be interesting to attempt to keep. the first is the Thornback ray and the second is the Japanese electric ray. Anyone have experience with either of those species? I really like the looks of the thornback and from what I have read/heard they're not too difficult to get acclimated and feeding. Also after looking up the electric rays (more out of curiosity than any real interest in keeping them), the books and sites I have found consistently mention that the japanese electric ray is only capable of delivering a mild shock. Would it be possible to keep them in a (peaceful) carefully controlled ray community or are they a species tank only fish? Has anyone dealt with them specifically? Thanks for any info :D

If you get one that has been in captivity awhile, they do ok. Not a beginner speices by any means. However, young animals or straight from the wild are a PAIN to get eating. Some of the rays sold as 'thornback' and 'fiddler' also get fairly large and need a lot of open swimming area. We're talking a meter or more long.

i catch thornbacks all the time and have wondered how they would fair in a tank. the ones i get max around 24" long (w/ tail) so the disc is hardly over 12" across.
