can you use sand with an under ground filter? I have mediun rocks now but like the looks of sand.Or would it be best toget a canster filter and switch to sand?

this is in a 55gal right now whisper 60 filter and under gravel filter

Not really, that's why they're called under gravel filters .

It's difficult to support the sand and draw water thru it.

Go with a HOB or canister or W/D.

What if he used an undergravel with reverse flow and powerheads? I've never tried it, but it may work. Just a thought.

Sand is nice looking but it has a way of getting into pump impellers and grinding them down. They will rattle in no time and will drive you nuts. Make sure you rinse the sand extremely well to get all of the silt out of it. The silt is very abrasive and is what gets into the pump. Expect to rinse the sand fifteen times or more. If you don't have lots of patients doing mundane tasks (rinsing the sand), I would advise against it. Most people cut corners and won't rinse it well, and then complain about it later. If you can do it right, it is certainly worth doing.

Unless it's rather course sand, it will blow up and you will get what CHOMPERS said.

No sand with an ugf.Thats the cool thing about sand,most of the dirt stays at the surface.With the sand you wouldnt get the flow thru and the ugf wouldnt work very well at all.

thanks guys i think ill stay with gravel and use an under gravel filter.
