I was wondering if i should equip my 120g tank with a ugf as well as the canister filter i have. And why or why not. Thank you all, i really appreciate all of your help.

Undergravel filter is not the best filter in the world BUT it's not as bad as they say.Well it was used for years before we got Hi Tek. The problem with undergravel filters is that they clog the gravel with dirt ans well you know. This is because it uses the gravel as the filter medium. Most people who don't like the UGF this is because they don't work well with plants. They tend to harm the roots, the useful nutients are not adsorbed properly by the plant. Also frequent leaks and bad seals by fish digging in the gravel will knock its working load down.

it is good for biological filtration....

we use them at work, we are putting an extra inch layer of gravel in each tank .. the more gravel the better!

Nope. The crud that builds up under there is digusting. Years ago fish keepers used to get Old tank Syndrome where the levels of nitrAtes were building up for no apparent reason. In most cases this could be attributed to the crud build upunder the plates. Youve heard the saying "Out of Sight, out of mind" well this is exactly what you dont want. IMO stick to the externals, there far easier to service than a UGF, if you want a bit extra filtration buy another external.
