Peat is sometimes used to make water softer/more acidic (although it can also be added to the filter if not used with plants). Organic potting soil is sometimes used for plants. If you aren't growing plants, than you'd be making a mess for no reason

Ok i know that this is an old thread but the new ? Has something to do with it so here it goes... If i do want to grow plants in this 55 i just got.... Do i have to use that stuff.... Cause the 55 already has watter and sand in it and then i thouhht about it but it was linda an emergency setup.... So do i need the peat moss or woll ot be ok wothout?
