I just witnessed something awesome and had to share it! I've got quite a mix of cichlids in my main tank...I'll sort it out later, just bought another tank today. Anyway, I just saw quite the show down! The combatants were a 3" Mayan, a 2.5" female con, a 4.5" Female nic, a pair of Jade eyes Male is 3", female slightly smaller, and a pair of 5" dempseys. Why is the thread called the underdog? Cause the fight was seperated into two teams, one team was the dempseys, the nic, the con, and they jade eyes, and the other team was just the mayan, and the mayan won the showdown!!! The pairs of fish would flare at him and he'd stare them down (yes, there are three pairs, the nic and con team up against opponents all the time), then the next wave of attackers would come, and he would discourage them too. The six were almost in this one big group and he still won!

Anyone else have some good cichlid underdog accounts? Maybe a one on one situation that wasn't quite so lop sided?

My Veija fenestratus (12-13") Overtook my Jag (~15"). I was IMPRESSED!

I've had my newest pair of Firemouths that I got a few months ago go against the king of the my 55 gallon, my larger firemouth. My cons won't even breed, and I have a male and 2 females. I guess they don't like each other. There's hardly any aggression except for when the larger firemouth "accidently" comes across one of my salvinis spot. Otherwise, everything is pretty cool in there.

i had a breeding pair of cons in a 30 gal and they had babies everywhere. male about 3.5 female 3 inches.
in my 55 galone tank i had a butti that kept beating on all his tank mate anhd he had just killed my electric blue dempsey that i paid like $60 for! so i got pissed off and threw his little 2inch azz in the 30 right in the crowd of free swimming babies and the male immediatly came out and bit the butti in the face then the female aswell. the butti relize what happenbed and faught themn both off and then started to beat them up! the butti ended up swimming around in their babies after 15 mins of combat! i rilize i had a supreme badazz on my hands and gave him his own tank!
the cons were matur and had fry in there and the butti was an inch and half smaller.!:)
thats my best story!

That is pretty decent. I know that butti's are tough, but a breeding pair of cons with fry are not to be messed with, especially if you're smaller than they are!

my pair of 2.5 inch brichardi fend off and sometimes engage in combat with large SA/CA cichlids(8 inch sev, 4 inch pike, 6 inch nicuaraganese, 3-5 inch eartheaters) from their millions of fry.

it's weird, the other african cichlids (3-7 inchers) will never go near the other side of the tank because they know there are 2 mean brichardies there, but the SA/CA I guess are dumber/braver/unwise or do not recognize the body language of african parents rearing fry since they aren't african.

i can't wait til the babies grow up.... that whole side of the tank will be off limits since there will be about 30 brichardi defending it, that is of course til my pike is big enough to start makin meals outta them.

my breeding cons never start any quarrels, pretty lax with other tankmates. had a female homegrown absolutely destroy a much larger bunk flowerhorn juvie though. messed up.
