My 55 gallon flowerhorn tank is setup bare bottom with tiles on the bottom as decoration. Just a few holey rock stones and a piece of driftwood with some plants as well for decoration.
My flowerhorn is a pig , he loves to eat and poop.
Would it make sense to use a undergravel filter under the tile to try to get rid of some of the poop that seems to like to collect around the crevices where the tile meet the glass?
Seems like a breeding ground for badness, but I like the way the tile looks.
I'm currently using two HOB filters so I am sure it is getting pretty decent filtration, just seems to me getting that crap off the bottom would help.
Any advise for a newbie?

Thanks
Mike

hello; Not sure what you plan the undergravel filter (UGF) to be able to do. Do you plan to put the UGF under the tiles or on top?

Personally I would just use a gravel vac and sweep over tile every wc. The undergravel filter will just contribute to more nitrates imo. Maybe consider a rotating powerhead to help debri from settling on the tile floor.

If your intention is to have the stuff laying on the bottom spewed all over as smaller particulate to be pulled into the HOB filters , it might just work, but I imagine it would make the tank water appear to have a constant cloudy, turbid look.
I agree with Tom, it would be better and healthier for the tank just to vacuum it out Above and below the tiles by pulling them up regularly. and replace the old water with new water. Anytime stuff sits out of sight, either under the tiles, or in a filter, its not really out of the tank, its just decomposing and creating high nitrates, and other invisible yet undesirable compounds.
