UNDERGRAVEL FILTER AND SAND DOES IT WORK?

I NEED TO PUT A NEW FILTRATION SYSTEM IN MY TANK I HAVE HANG ON THE BACK FILTERS AND POWERHEAD,BUT I HAVE SAND AND WAS WONDERING IF YOU CAN PUT A UNDER GRAVEL FILTER OR WOULD THE SAND BE TOO FINE, I'M DOING SOME AQUACAPING WITH LIVE PLANTS JUST WONDERING WHATS THE BEST FILTRATION BECAUSE ALL OF THE FISH WASTE SITS AT THE BOTTOM OF THE TANK AND IT REALLY STANDS OUT BECAUSE I HAVE BLACK SAND? LET ME KNOW IF YOU HAVE ANY IDEAS, THANKS

It's just going to fall through the plates. If you have sand, the doodoo should just sit at the top, making it quick and easy to clean out.
