hi, i thinking of adding sands to my tank. do i need a undergravel filter ? how does undergravel helps ? undergravel is it using air pump as i nv use undergravel before.

Hello; Sand may have particles that are too small and will pass thru the plate of an undergravel filter (UGF). This may build up under the plate. One member mentioned covering the plate of the filter with some bonded filter material, this may help. You could perhaps find the thread as it was fairly recent. Another method is to sift out the fine stuff and keep only the larger sand particles that are too big to pass thru.
I have used UGF for many years with good results. Many do not like them. I have always used them with gravel myself.

you definitely need gravel with any undergravel filter I've used. and while air driven is ok, you are far more likely to have the clogging issues so many people complain about. go with a powerhead on a long enough tube that the output roils the surface.

i hate these filters. they dont even really filter just collect;)
