UnderGravel Filters

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have them on two of my tanks. They work excellent and the parameters are always 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite on those tanks. I use a easy mechanical filter with them typically but I think they are a great bargain filter.

PS This is kind of a hot topic around here ... Got my flame suit on.

I like ugf. The real reason I don't use them is because most fish I keep dig. Once the plates are uncovered the effectness does down dramatically. My sole display tank I could use ugf except wife says the continous bubbling sound makes her have to use the restroom to much.

I've often thought it strange no-one really uses these much now. I used to have them back when I stareted keeping fish some 20+ yrs ago.

I had incredibly clear tanks with pristine parameters. I used a gravel tidy to stop fish exposing the plates and used powerheads.

Why don't I use them now? I don't know. I rarely see them for sale now. The trend in freshwater seems to be external/internal power filters now. I don't care about getting flamed-I don't think any other filter can maintain the same parameters as UG. People will say it needs alot of upkeep regards maintenance. Well I used to take the top layer of gravel/sand out to clean each W/C and I still do this now with my FX5 so theres no difference at all.

I'm going to stop now else I see myself getting my setup again :nilly:

Youre right.Theres nothing that can maintain stable parameters like them, according to 2 commercial tanganyican cichlid breeders Ive spoke to that still use them.
Youre right about the flaming though.Almost not worth bringing it up,the level of anger that comes up.Youll note its not from folks with decades of fishkeeping experience though.

I don't use them as I run central systems and use sand. Its all personal preference really.

Very true. Its a shame some of the newer members of the hobby don't give it a go though

I use them in all my tanks. I think a lot of fishkeepers treat them like "Mom's Mini Van". They are dependable and get the job done, they just aren't "Cool".

application.. application.. application... imo no better filter for a heavily planted tank. but if I had one with my eels, I'de be freaking out all the time afraid one would get trapped underneath it or in it.. Used properly They are just as good as any other filtration set-up, in in some instances out perform. I just find them about 2x as much to purchase for a set-up then a simple HoB does.
