I am setting up a 55 gal tank for the first time in many years. back then undergravel filters were popular as a secondary filter, but I don't see them mentioned a lot now. Are sponge filters better as a secondary filter in your opinion?

They both do a good job
if you already have the UGF by all means
I would not aquire one if you do not
For a 55gal I'd use a HOB or 2 if you won't use a canister
