hi all i am thinking of trying something new on my 120 gallon plywood tank. currently i have my tank set up with a 35 gallon wet/dry sump for mechanical filtration and bio filtration. all is working well. currently i have my sump return split to go to the top of the tank via a spray bar and also go to the bottom of the tank as under gravel jets. this all workes great and i have no problems with the setup for the most part.

so what i would like to do is add an under gravel filter to the tank to help with colecting exses wast in the tank. i do gravel vac my tank on a regular basis but when i do i have a lot of solid waste that gets sucked up.

my tank inhabitants include about 18 or so African cichlids, 3 dorf gromies, 2 clown loaches and a 3.5 inch western painted turtle.

the turtle provides most of the waste. so i was thinking that i could set up a undergravel filter utilizing the plumbing i have setup in the tank with some mods and run this filter to a canister filled entirely with mechanical filter media. for my canister i am planning on using one of the clear home water filter containers so that i can monitor the filter while it is running. would this work to help remove the waste from the bottom of the tank? i will try to make up some diagrams of my idea
