Underwater camera for monitoring

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
New legislation has just come in from the European Court of fish law that prohibits any hobbyist instaling underwater cameras in their tanks. Fish have privacy rights too and instaling cameras goes against their basic fishy rights.

Makes sense really, I mean would you like to be filmed having a dump or sorting the missus out with some man love?

On a more serious note, yes there's loads of stuff available for the tech freaks out there to monitor tanks. I'd never do it but i'm sure a few will chime in with their set ups. Sorry for the lighthearted post, I couldn't resist.

It's really funny though. Uncle sam is already monitoring all of us so why not let us monitor our fishies 24/7 :nilly:

I was looking into this but didn't want to get into a big networking protocol thing.
Using a web cam or nanny came is very easy. You can download yawcam for free. You can broadcast to your home network and internet.
I keep laptops near my tanks so this is extremely easy to do.
The cams you can buy that go in the tanks are junk in my opinion.
I think one of the security cams I was looking at had an accessory for mounting on a glass door. I always thought they may be an interesting thing for a tank.
So bottom line is a nanny cam type of thing may be the best. Some can pan and zoom.

Use a nanny cam or webcam over an in tank cam. There is no additional benefit from it being in the tank. With the apex system I have running I can integrate live streaming fairly easily. I will be doing so when I go on vacation.

There are very few options for a fully submersed camera. Even if you can find one with a fully submerged waterproofed rating you will still have the danger of the wiring in your tank. I had one in my tank but it was just below the water line so the wiring would not be submerged. The best option would be to put a camera in container like a large jar or vase to submerge it. There are some available that can be fully submertged but they are extremely expensive. I know this because I own a security company and specialize in cctv

D-link has some stable networkcameras thats not that big of a load on your wallet. You wont be able to put them in the tank but you can pan and zoom with them through your phone.
