So my Savannah monitor arrived and I've had him a few days now, the only problem I've noticed is that he is a bit underweight. He's eating lots but would adding 1 or 2 pinkies a week for now help him put on some weight.
He is eating mostly crickets dusted with calcium powder/herptivite. He was a bit dehydrated as well but I held a medicine syringe (without the needle just the plastic end) to his mouth and drank quite a bit of water from me.
You can get yourself a basin and fill it up with enough water to float the monitor in and float him for half hour or so, make sure he can keep his head out of water but it will help get him back hydrated and bathe him.
yeah this sounds like dehydration. just make sure he has a huge water bowl and keep feeding him the same amount that you have been with maybe a few extra crickets or an extra pinky. I am sure he will be fine within a months time.
Humidity also may be off in your eclosure. Savs usually become dehydrated because of husbandry. Make sure the substare you are using he can burrow himself in. The substarte should be dry on top and a little moist when you dig around in it. If you have a complete screen on top cover most the humidty will escape. Just cover up most of the screen on top. Rodents as a staple diet work well if you have the right temps for them to digest them.
What would be an the ideal humidity for a sav, none of the books I've read really referance humidity. The room he is in is relatively humid due to the aquariums in it.
