I just did a large water change in my 55 gallon tank. I planned on putting extra water in to make up for what had evaporated. In order to raise the SG in the water, I had gotten it to 1.007 or so in the 5 gallon bucket. In the tank the SG was about 1.004. The bucket sat for a few hours so things could dissolve before I put the water in the tank. I had gotten to the point where I could hardly take water out of the bottom of the bucket with the jug I use, so I poured it in directly from the bucket. When I did this, a small cloud of tiny sea salt crystals appeared and dispersed before I could attempt to remove them. I turned on the filter (it had been off) and started getting water into the bucket. I dechlorinated the water and added some to the tank.
By then, my violet goby had been swimming around the tank and had about four of these crystals attached to his side and back. Now I'm scared half to death, because I don't know exactly why you aren't supposed to have undissolved crystals in the tank. What effects do these have on the tank and especially my goby, who seems to have them attached to his slime coat? What can I do to help?
