G'evening,

A question for those who've built stands only to find their floor wasn't as flat as they would have hoped !

I have built a solid stand to hold an 8ft Stingray tank. The stand is precise and flat but the concrete floor undulates slightly. There appears to be a 5mm bump running the length of the room and I have to cross this with my tank/stand. If you look at the photo below the centre of the stand is heavy on the floor but each end is raised by around 3mm.

Now I understand that the poly tiles are designed to help take up slight variances in stand build or floor level but is a 3mm difference acceptable ?

If you look again at the picture you'll see that I've put poly tiles under the tank and also under the stand so there is a total of around 10mm of polytile.

What do you think ?

Thanks

Martin

I recently had pretty much the same problem, only my floor is bumpy and unlevel. I had to shim the crap out of it, I think it would be a good idea to shim your tank as well. You'd rather be safe than sorry, especially with large tank like you have.

When I used to build homes, we sometimes ran into the problem putting new cabinets into older homes. If you have an electric planer and a scribe you can try this --- Shim the stand so it is level. Now scribe a line along the bottom plates, keeping the scribe open the same distance, and following the contour of the floor. Then you can plane the bottom plates so the contour follows the floor a lot better. You won't get it exact, but it will be a lot better than 5mm.

The floor tiles will help. Also, using an OSB under the bottom of the tank will help as well. Using the OSB and Floor tiles will help promote even settling.

If this is an unfinished concrete floor, you should be able to purchase a liquid leveling product. I've used this product with excellent results. I am not sure if it can be used on a wood/plywood floor though.

The poly tiles should take care of it.

Stack 3 strip of notebook paper under each corner and as you fill the tank, tug on the middle strip to make sure the pressure is even at the corners.

Why 3 strips?

The center piece of paper will slide against the other pieces with even friction.

Nice looking fish too! :D
