Stopped into a LFS that I have driven by several times over the years, had never checked it out though. Got off work early yesterday to take care of something in the same area, so I thought I would stop in and check it out. Not a ton of stock, but they had a nice group of Texas cichlids (about 1.5 - 2"). I've never seen any available locally, so I snagged the largest in the tank who was showing the most color.

He is hanging out in a 20 long right now until he is of a size that I can try and introduce him into my 180. Already eating flake and small pellets.

What is the growth rate on these? I know most cichlids grow pretty quickly if given correct water conditions and fed well. He needs to catch up the other fish in my 180 (oscar 6", spotted gar 8", ocell PB 5"), or at least be big enough not to be eaten. I have read that texas are pretty tough little fish.. how big should I let him get before I try and introduce him?

Sorry no pics, he has been hiding in the cave I put in the 20 for him.

They grow as fast as any other cichlid. Just like your oscar for instance. I would think that 4" should be to put him in bigger tank unless your fish can be overly aggressive.

Ok, that's about what I was thinking in terms of size prior to introduction. I don't have any aggression issues with the other fish, they are well fed and leave each other be. I'm more worried about the texas causing an issue once he gets introduced. Anyone with experience introducing a texas into a similar community? I know every fish is different... just trying to get an idea of what to expect. The fish is quite timid now, but I have read that they kind of "switch on" around 4"... anyone?

mine is about 3" now and isnt scared of much. waitin for the "switch" to turn on
