So my 500 nightcrawlers from Cabela's is not gonna be here on the day I'm going fishing..which is Saturday...
And the closest bait shop that carries crawlers is 40minutes away from my house..and 80minutes away from the reservoir were headed to..

A PETCO near my house carries; minnows, wax worms, meal worms, and crickets.
But what would be the BEST bait out of the 4 for bluegill(small & big)?

Would bluegill/crappie/trout/bass MINNOWS go on wax worms?

If I had to pick, I'd use rosy red minnows as food. One of my cycling feeder goldfish died a while ago, so I tossed him into the lake. A large bluegill snatched it within 2 seconds (not an exaggeration). Alternatively, you could try to catch some local minnows in the body of water you're fishing in.

thanks but what should I use for the tiny bluegills?
how large was the bluegill by the way?

I wasn't fishing for them that time, just decided to feed the fish. Largest I've gotten out of that area was about 10 inches, I figure the one that took the feeder was at least 8. Tiny blue gills? How tiny? I've used bread on a bent stable to catch em at about two inches. Bread/corn kernel/deli meat on a small hook should take em up to 3 or 4 inches if you want them as bait for bass.

Druu; any pictures?! I want bluegills as small as possible.lol

noway..shark..really??! i thought the closes wal-mart was like 45minutes away..
i'll go do a store finder on their website right now..

Hey sharkaddict just found 15 near my zip code.lol
do they sell crawlers at every store?

Looking for tank bluegills? I did a native tank of em last semester- bluegills and green sunfish. This year, that tank's doing basic tropical fish and I've got a bichir in another tank. I could ask my friend though, i think he's got one at about 2.5 inches or less. He caught it the night I caught my 6 inch green sunfish. The green was supposed to be fileted for my bichir, but he lived for 30 mins in a plastic bag w/o water. [Don't call me cruel, he was supposed to be bichir food.] The two of em are in a 10 gal now unless he's released them- I'll check for you though. May be able to dig up a pic of last years fish. You could also try a fined meshed net. We netted a bluegill at about 0.75-1.00 inch a few weeks ago..

kinda..i want to keep them until they get eaten by my turtle.lol

i have a umbrella net but just ound out it is illegal to use in my state..CA

Not sure what an umbrella net is.. got a pic of one? The thing that comes to mind when you say umbrella net is a cast net. There's a diff set up you can use if cast nets are out of the question. Take old pantyhose, 2 hangers, some fishing line and a can of cat food. Bend the 2 hangers into a square. wrap pantyhose around square and sew on edges. you should have a large square with a pantyhose bottom. tie 2 feet of string to each corner, join all 4 strands at a common point. tie a stronger rope to the junction. lower this about a foot into the water, spoon some cat food on top of it. when you see the ideal sized bluegills over your mesh, pull up and you should be able to catch and bucket it. I've used a similar method for silversides and mummichogs back home. good luck!
