So a few weeks ago I moved my electric blue johanni to a bother tank seein as he was looking beat up. Started noticing that he was not eating during my lunch break from work I went home to check on everything as always and decide to see how he was doing when I netted him I found the he was a she and had fry in her mouth. I don't know what to do and have never encouraged this. Please help

let her hold onto the babies until she releases them (she's in her own tank now, right?) once she releases them you can feed them crushed flake food and other crushed foods, since the fry are about twice the size of newborn guppies (if not bigger). if you dont have another EBJ (also known as a maingano) the babies are probably hybrids, and you dont want to breed them or sell them without the buyer knowing that they're hybrids.

Yea I put her in a tank to her self. she released them sometime this afternoon. There are nine of them. Here are some pictures of the two and the fry in the breeder net

that's a nice pair you got... personally, i would either grow out the babies and keep the females, or you can find new homes for them... papa will probably kill any other males as they grow up. just make sure that the mom gets plenty of food to recover before the male starts harassing her again! good luck!

Thanks, one of the guys I work with wants a few, and I was thinking of keeping the females if I can pick them out. What I don't get is I thought the female were a yellowish orange color. So how is it that the female I have s blue and black even tho its a faded looking color?

the regular Johanni species females are orange, maingano (electric blue johanni are actually maingano, not johanni) males and females are almost the same color. the female tends to have paler black markings and shorter fins. as long as the male isnt the boss of the community, you should be fine with the pair. when my male took role as dictator of my tank, he seriously TOOK OVER... just make sure somebody is more dominant... good luck!

Thanks, that helps a lot. All the babies are doing great and feeding like piranhas and growing. They are starting to show a little of color.

Shoot. I just let natural selection run its course. Those that make it, get to live in my tank! :D
I have several generations and never did anything special. I did sell some off, however, to thin out my tank, but now it's too bare!

I will keep a few of them to put in my other tank, but any after this I'll probably just take to the LPS and get trade values for my snake food
