Now I have kept a lot of fish over the years and have seen may odd things in that time but this is new to me. I picked up five juvenile Festae from my buddy today. They looked fine when I left. I put them in a quarantine tank and an hour later their eyes were beginning to cloud over. A few hours later and the whiteness is shedding or peeling away from their eyes. If this is Cloud Eye, I have never seen it like this before. Behind the shedded covering, the fish's eyes are clear and healthy. What is this? This thread may be moved but since the fish are Amer. Cichlids I thought I would get better info here. The disease thread gets a lot less traffic than this forum and i would like quick answers.

If they currently appear healthy, I would think there wouldn't be cause for immediate concern.

Perhaps they are adapting to new water parameters - change in pH or other could cause them to exude a slime layer as some form of protection, but then is sloughed off after they acclimate?

This is interesting information, and I'm sure a more experienced individual could be more help.

that seems to happen when the water temperature is different from one tank to another how long did you acclimate them to the quarantine tank? did you float them or use the drip method? if its clearing up then I really wouldnt worry about it but it couldve been caused by the way they were acclimated

Yeah the water is fine. It's not a new set up or anything. I use it primarily as a holding and quarantine tank. The water is changed weekly and after each inhabitant. I just checked on them again and the whiteness is gone from most of them. Could it be their slime coat?

I have had fish eyes cloud over when switching them from one tank to another in my house. I think a sudden change in water parameters will do it. I just left mine un treaded and they turned back slowly. I would just keep an eye on them.

I guess we were typing at the same time. I floated the bag the same way that I always do. Apparently, I need to adapt to the drip method. I just have never had a problem like this before. All of my fish are healthy. I will give it another hour before i do anything else. When this "sloughing off" process is complete, should I add Melafix to the water as a precaution?

Honestly Gruff, I think what is happening here may be a perfectly natural physiological reaction to a "new" environment as others have stated.

I would doubt that using a medication would be necessary. It sounds like you know what you are doing, and monitoring the situation would be your best bet here.

Thank you, Jag123 and the rest of you that quickly chimed in to help me. They are looking a lot better now. So I guess I overreacted. I'll hold off on the melafix for a while and keep checking on them. I just don't like not knowing the reasons behind things that occur in my tanks. I rather ask a dumb question than to watch my stock suffer and die. You guys are awesome as always!
