Unknown CA cichlid

Hey all, picked this guy up mislabeled at my LFS as a rainbow cichlid. Any ideas on what he could be? Reminds me of a crypto crossed with a vieja

It kinda does look like a rainbow though just the color throws it off maybe stressed ? Or mixed with a convict or hrp

It does look like a rainbow, in very bad coloration. Or as you suspect, with all the random mixing, could be a hybrid.
Depending on mood, substrate or many other factors, multispinossa are quite changeable.

That's a Rainbow cichlid.

Hah, just my luck I'm used to the yellow coloration, and he's taller bodied than I'd expect. Interesting! He's very assertive in my 75

My initial thoughts were a mix with a crypto of some sort. He's pretty beefy for his size and was unintimidated by my bigger red hooks and sun catfish who are twice his size.

That's 100% rainbow. Don't go on color, they change color sometimes depending on mood.
