I had a flowerhorn for about 5 months it got huge really fast in a 40 gallon and when i did a water change on fri. and totally moved around the whole tank. That night a clown loach of mine died for some reason? Then the next morning my flowerhorn was barely swimming and it was laying on its side barely breathing I have no idea what caused its death. Someone told me never to feed my fish feeder fish? Im farely new to this and have no idea what happened maybe it was ick but im not sure the Flowerhorn changed colors when it was sick.

if it was ick you would see lots of little white spots on him, clown loaches are prone to get them very easily.

how often do u do water changes? a growing large flowerhown in a 40g could have easily led to bad water quality if you were not doing regular changes, a sudden change in water parameters could have also chemistry shocked your fish.

best bet is to test your water...

I did a 50% water change every week and made sure the PH and ammonia levels were fine the latest one I did was a little before a week because I was going to be gone.

Did you test the parameters after the fish died, with large fish in minimal tanks ammonia can spike suddenly. Since it had been a week it probably wasn't chlorine though even experienced keepers sometimes get distracted and forget to dechlor, I did that once and barely caught it in time. Do you live in an apartment building or a house because plumbing work can also kill fish.

Do you have an undergravel filter. My thoughts are, if you do, you may have stired some gunk that had been trapped in your gravel back into the water that might cause a spike in your water quality. I know that i am currently dealing with this problem becuase i have gotten some gunk under my filter plate that is being sucked back up by the powerfilter. I have also apparently developed a colony of snails that live under it.

I used a Whisper 60, but today i just went out and bought a Fluval 304 for my tank and last night my green terror just stopped swimming and couldn't swim and freaked out for a sec. when i got near the tank and died. It turned completely pale white just like the flowerhorn did when it died if that has to do with anything?
