Do Unstable Dats that don't stabilize have the potential of getting sick more often or dying prematurely? Concerned, especially since Dats are something I really want to keep. :(
as far as i know the color stability is more of mood judgement in mine.....more of a sense of security than health. I believe an unstable dat will live just as long as a stable one.

I agree.

Thanks for the insight. More from the rest of the members would be appreciated though. I mean, hearing stable and unstable gets me thinking about healthy and terminally ill, so I'm just hoping grabbing unstable dats and them not getting stable for a long time won't mean I've made my aquarium a tomb. :D

Healthy dats can be stable or unstable. You tend to find that Indo's tend to be more unstable than the other type, that's not to say that the other types can't be unstable. It's more your luck than anything else, some get more stable when they are stressed while others are only stable while feeding. Changing tanks and decoration can also make an unstable dat more stable and visa versa. Either keep them singly or in groups of 5 or more with some dither fish to help them become more comfortable in the tank.

Agree totally.

I have 3 indos, 1 ngt and 2 polotas in the same tank.. the one indo that is stable 50/50 is the big eater, the boss and the most social one. the other two are still awesome, social and good eaters but stable all the time. sometimes it's the other way around..

datnoids can turn stable or unstable for many different reasons. either environment or tank mates. ph. etc. for those who kept datnoids for long time. i think they are the most weird fishes. yet very eye pleasing. it takes time getting use to the fish. compared the cichlids or other breed. their behavior is very different.

no. they're fine if they're eating. and the water is good.. i have a super black IT in my batch.. but after transffering them in a large tank after 6 months.. after 2 weeks he stabilize.

i feel like it does affect their mental health , an unstable dat is unhappy (even though it might be active and eating) ... and if anything living thing is unhappy for a long time, i can't see how thats good for their physical health cuz i would guess hormone levels would be different in a happy animal compared to a depressed one. i dont know, and i admit that i dont have scientifical support for all this, but just logically thinking, unhappy = bad health . eitherway, try and stablize a dat as much as you can .
