hey, im going to be keeping a 200ish gallon pond in my basement, it will be above ground and held up with a wooden frame. its about 2ft deep but i will probably make the top about 4 ft off the ground.

im confused on my filtration, as i found from my post in the pond section i need a sump/wetdry.

im a little confused by these, because i dont understand how this would work out where i live that averages about 15 power-outages a year. and i dont want that siphon to be broke and have a floor full of dead shrimp and water.

but, if i understand right, this will work out for me like i need?

any help is appreciated. im so confused :(

probably so, sounds like the simplest way as far as i know?

is there any other way to do this?

There are other way, like syphons, but I think an overflow through bulkheads is the way to go.

but wouldnt a siphon fail in a power outtage?

Yes and there is ways of getting around it but...

the easiest is to use a bulkhead out of the side of the sump just off the bottom so the solids can settle and be cleaned out when it builds up...

Be sure you use a pre-filter on the pump, or you'll be wearing out impeller shafts and bearings too fast.

Just adjust the water level to hold all the water with the pump off. Plug in the pump and the only water you'll have out of the tank is the water that is being pumped up to the sump and filtration.

Should the power go out, the filter will drain. You'll have to find a way to keep it wet and alive...I used a small 12vt pump on a emergency light setup and it was always enough till I got home to manually keep it wet...

edit: I was assuming the filter was to be built above the pond...

^^ the sump will be below the pond.

i guess i should read the stickies.. a siphon with an up-tube like in the overflow thread work in a power outage?

your diagram will work in a power outage...there is NO siphon it works on the overflow principle...
In your illustration the return line (green) is not submerged.

The pump in your sump will pump water to the pond and that is the only water that will overflow back into the sump...
once the water level goes below the level of the overflow, there will be no more water movment.
When the power is restored and the pump starts to fill the pond again, raising the water level above the overflows and it can then be drained back to the sump...

Pretty foolproof actually. the only thing you need to be sure of is that the overflows can handle the volume of water that the pump is pumping, and in case of a Power outage, you need to be sure the sump can hold all the water that will drain down to the overflows or "low water level"...
