The Grotto
Well this time i finally pulled the fry and they are getting ready to do it again. I really love how the colors of both the male and female come out during pre-spawn. here you can see the lateral line on the male disapear giving him a solid look;) I really love this pair. The General is now 14" and still growing. I have added live blackworms and massivore to their diet to boost the protien and batch size. we'll see though;) anyway here is a lil video of the pair, I hope you like.

Very nice pair of Umbees! Wish i could get my hands on one up here.

What purpose does the divider serve, seeing as the male can also pass through? o.O

Thank you. I seem to get asked alot about the divider:) Its all apart of the magic in the tank;) they have deemed it as her cave and safe spot. all is good while its in there even with door open like it is. as soon as i pull it the male will keep her at the top of the tank. its totally psychological for them. but with it in they breed like no other lol

That is so odd with the whole divider thing. Fascinating creatures these fish! Beautiful umbees btw! I have been curious about umbees for awhile, and would love to try one but only have a 125. What would you say the minimum sized tank would be for keeping a male umbee? And is there any chances of these beasts working in a community? Keep up the great work!

thank you for the comments. And i would say a 125 would be good for a growout tank or for small pair for lil while but if you want a permanent tank i would say an 8' tank for life.

Thats a beastly pair, is the general aggressive towards you when your hands in the tank? Im growing out an umbee at the moment hope it turns out this good. Its 1.5" and has heaps of blue on its face im hoping for a male. Any tips on when they become aggressive roughly?

no he acts aggressive untill i get into the tank, then he hides during maintanence lol. the female will attack the syphon while im cleaning. as far as aggression goes it varys from fish to fish and what to do. dividers work, you may have to usher him with a net or something so he wont attack. ive had a couple fish i had to remove during major cleanings due to aggression lol
