The land of the pine
Hey yall! I don't know if many of you remember me but I used to post here frequently. About a year ago I kinda just stopped. No particular reason. I'd like to start posting again so I will be doing just that. I'm currently running 2 tanks and a pond. I've still got my redfin pickerel but I moved him from a 60 gallon to a 180 gallon. My largemouth bass is doing great on my pond but it's got a serious duckweed problem. I'd say my Lmb is nearing 4 and a half pounds. Sadly, my bowfin recently passed away. He was 8 inches long and in a 100 gallon grow out. I really don't know what happened. I had 4 from a batch of about 100 that survived the very sensitive fry stage and a gave the other 3 to friends. All three are still alive. My pond still has a strong breeding population of bluespotted sunfish. I don't know what I'm gonna do with my empty 100 gallon though. It's still got some gambusia that were supposed to be bowfin food. Juvenile bowfin were nearly impossible to find last time and their maintenance is ridiculous for the first few months. I'm thinking either crappie or maybe northern hog sucker if I could get one.

Black Crappie would look nice in a 100 gallon.
Yep. I agree. I had one for about 6 months a while back but it was killed by my red breasted sunfish. It was a very cool crappie too. Even started to take pellets.

I've had a pair of black crappie for a couple of months, mixing them with various Lepomis has not gone well. Currently they are in a 56 gallon with some common goldfish, which is working out well. What other cold water fish would be suitable? Aggressive fish that will bully them are out, also anything that will out compete them for food.

I'm thinking a Bullhead and Yellow Perch might be good.

A bullhead should be able to hold it's own. Maybe try White Crappie, although that wouldn't be much variety.

i actually like the idea of a white and black crappie. Maybe a yellow perch too.

can catch small yellow perch at lake wheeler off the dock occasionally. should match up with crappie well - could do a small school of white perch as well

I've caught them at bond before but never knew they were in wheeler. Thanks!
