Put marker on the tank...so when he is swimming by..you will have an idea.

Soon or later, it will be close to the wall. It won't be 100% accurate. But at least u get some ideas. Or try to move the food back n for a long the wall to get it close.

How wide is the tank? When he turns in the corner and stretches his body out try to approx his measurement compared to the width..if your looking for an exact measurement, nothing beats taking him out of the water
 
Like mentioned try to use things as reference such as width of the tank or measuring tape running along the bottom trim of the tank. When he is up front and swims by youll be able to guesstimate. Its impossible for us to tell you how big the fish is. Im not there and pictures can be deceiving.

The only sure way to know is to remove the aro from the tank. You could use a very large clear bag to catch him and its less stressful than netting. Iv'e also read that pillow cases work well but i don't like that idea very much.
