ok so many of you know that one of my redfoots was doing poorly...he wasnt eating losing weight puffy eyes...i messed with the humidity and ofered sweet fruits (guava and such) to entice him to eat and it worked. i tested his stoll at work and it all came up negative (even had head vet tech check me). so as a preventative cause not all parsites will show up in fecal directs and floats we have been giving him panicur its basically an anti worm, parasite liquid. he was doing better and began eating and now as he is on two more doses is going south and our vet is stumped and made calls to other reptile vets on the island and so far no feedback as what the next step may be so if anyone else has gone thorugh this problem or knows a vet on the mainland can you give me the name of the vete and clinic so i can have on of the vets i work with call and ask their opinon...thanks...

he is losin lots of weight and isnt even drinking water...

Oh man, I'm sorry to hear that Vice. I don't know of anyone off the top of my head who can help. I hope you find a solution the the problem soon. Dehydration is not good. Are you force feeding him anything? Turtles and tortoises are the worst reptiles to force feed I believe. I'm glad I've never had to do that. I had enough trouble putting eye drops on a box turtle retreating into her shell. Good luck and I hope he gets better real soon.

tried forfeeding some water that had tort food disolved in it...you thought eyedrops were hard try getting a hatchling tort to open its mouth so you can stick the tip of a syringe in and jam mush down his throat...

thanks trust me ill keep you posted...

How big is the red foot? Soaking in warm water is all I can offer. Best in a dark container so he's more secure - cover it loosly if necessary.

Ask the vet if giving panacur might have upset the tortoises usual stomach flora - they must have good bugs and stuff to help digestion I suppose. If the panacur has wiped them out it might be the cause of his problem.

Are you keeping him separate and do you have other healthy redfoots that you know don't have worms or anything?

I know you're really worried but if you can avoid it - don't watch him when you've just fed him. The liklihood is that he'll just go straight back to his hide. I tend to stick them in the water bowl, leave food in between the bowl and hide then walk off and leave them too it. Seems to help reluctant feeders but if yours is off his food being poorly and not just picky, it may not help.

Good luck - hope he gets better

Daily warm baths for 20 - 30 mins and then see what favourites you can get him to eat like mushrooms or bananas (my red foots favourites) or some cooked chicken.

If you have Baytril or some other antibiotic then inject him daily with that.

That is what I have done and it does work.

Good luck

he gets soaked every day in "baby warm water" for 30 min. yes he is seperate from my other healthy and active redfoot. they were both given panacur as a preventative so the healthy one is still healthy and should have no worms, the sick on should have no worms as he is done with panacur now the doc said it shouldnt mess his digestive track. for size he is a hatchling (carapace 1.5-2 inch at largest)...i dont watch him eat in fact the only time i sit and watch is when i soak him cause he pulls his head in when he sits in water and im afraid he wont move and drown himself pretty and since his legs and stuff get pulled in if i filled it only enough to not get to his head while pulled into the shell their would be no water pretty much in the container...vets going to make more call today i need to do something nice or buy her something for going the distance to help me...cause im stumped...and so is she but shes doind her damnedest to help figure out my problem tort...

djc776'S advice is the only you can follow, except for your vet's..I have no clue...sorry

so i take it there is no one here to that can help provide a name of a reptuable reptile vet or one who deals with alot of torts. cause we(vet and i) havent found any searching the net...

ps ... still no intake of anything and i cant forcefeed him as he wont come out of his shell long enough for me to get his head in my fingers to help get his mouth open...

 Rest In Paradise Bongo:cry:

he didnt make it i found him this morning in with the back half of his body in the wading dish and the front half pointing back towards his hide...:cry:
