SANDESTIN, Fla. -- A 14-year-old girl died Saturday after a shark attacked her while she and a companion were swimming in the Gulf of Mexico off the Florida Panhandle, authorities said.

The teenagers were swimming on boogie boards about 100 yards offshore when they noticed a dark shadow in the water, authorities said. The other swimmer was not injured, Walton County Sheriff's spokeswoman Donna Shank said.

Both girls swam to shore, and the victim was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead, Shank said. The girl was on vacation from Gonzales, La., but her name was not immediately released.

Jeff White, 49, of Atlanta, said his son was one of three men who brought the girl to shore in a raft.

"He said at one point, the shark was underneath them," White said. "So they stopped paddling. Somebody distracted the shark and they brought the girl the rest of the way in."

It was not clear what type of shark attacked her, said Stan Kirkland, spokesman for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

"The girl was some distance off from the shore," Kirkland said. "I don't think anyone got a good view of the shark."

The attack happened near the Camping on the Gulf Holiday Travel Park, about 45 miles east of Pensacola. Swimmers were ordered out of the water along 20 miles of crowded beaches shortly after the attack. It was not immediately clear whether they will be allowed back in Sunday.

Robert Goodwin, 12, of St. Louis, Mo., said he was ordered out of the water by authorities. "I didn't know that when I was told to get out it was a shark," he said. "I was like, what? Wow, that's not cool."

Added Goodwin's father, Mark: "It was just an eery feeling to see folks sitting there on the beach."

Florida averaged more than 30 shark attacks a year from 2000 to 2003, but there were only 12 attacks off the state's coast last year, according to statistics compiled by the American Elasmobranch Society and the Florida Museum of Natural History.

Surfer Fought Off Shark After Fatal Attack On Girl

UPDATED: 9:42 pm EDT June 26, 2005

DESTIN, Fla. -- A 20-mile stretch of beach on Florida's Panhandle coastline has reopened, after closing Saturday because of a fatal shark attack.

The Walton County Sheriff's Department said twice the normal number of beach patrol officers are on duty.

People at a condominium complex next to the beach where the girl was attacked said they spotted a shark Sunday morning close to shore that looked to be about 6 feet long.

Jamie Daigle, 14, of Gonzales, La., died after Saturday's attack.

She and another 14-year-old girl were swimming about 100 yards offshore when they noticed a dark shadow in the water, according to Walton County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Donna Shank.

Surfer Tim Dicus, who helped get the bleeding girl to shore, said he often warns swimmers to stay within the sand bars to avoid trouble.

Shank said Daigle was bitten on the lower portions of her body.

Dicus said he saw the attack.

"I paddled over real quick and pulled her out of the water just before the shark made another attack on her," he said. "I had to fend him off to get (Daigle) up onto the board, and then continue to fend him off as he ... followed us to the beach."

The 54-year-old surfer said Daigle was unconscious when he got to her. Her flesh had been torn from hip to knee.

He said the shark appeared to be a bull shark about eight feet long.

Dicus said he punched the shark on the nose as it tried to attack him. Two other swimmers came with a raft, which they put the girl in and towed to shore.

Shank said Daigle was transported to the Sacred Heart Hospital in South Walton, where she was pronounced dead.

The attack occurred near the Camping on the Gulf Holiday Travel Park, about 45 miles east of Pensacola on the Florida Panhandle.

Patrick O'Neill, the campground's general manager, refused to comment.

Florida had the largest number of documented shark attacks worldwide in 2003 with 31.

An autopsy is planned for Monday. A shark expert has been invited to attend to help determine the type and size of the shark involved.

Florida Shark Patrols Beefed Up After 2nd Attack

POSTED: 9:46 am EDT June 27, 2005
UPDATED: 5:48 pm EDT June 27, 2005

PENSACOLA, Fla. -- Following a second shark attack off the Florida Panhandle in three days, extra patrols have been added to look out for sharks along the Gulf Coast.

Jamie Marie Daigle

Authorities have beefed up beach, air and water patrols, with 10 off-duty deputies called in to bolster the monitoring teams.

A shark expert -- Erich Ritter of the Shark Attack Institute -- said bite marks indicate 14-year-old Jamie Marie Daigle was likely killed in an attack Saturday by a 6-foot-long bull shark. Daigle, of Gonzales, La., was swimming on a boogie board with her friend, Felicia Venable, at least 100 yards from shore in the Gulf of Mexico when the shark bit her in the leg.

One of the rescuers said he heard screams for help and saw Daigle's boogie board -- but no rider. He rushed into the water and found the unconscious girl being towed by a surfer on his board.

With help from other swimmers, they brought Daigle to shore in a raft with the shark underfoot. Venable swam to shore.

The surfer who brought the unconscious girl to shore said she had been swimming far out in an area unprotected by sandbars or lifeguards. He said he saw a shark fin, but didn't think much of it because that was a fairly common sight when surfing. Then, he heard the girl scream and went to help her. He said the shark was aggressive and that it was like being locked in a yard with a vicious dog.

He said when he went to help the girl, he had expected that the shark would have been gone, since that's the norm when sharks attack humans. But he said this shark was vicious and continued to attack and pursue him all the way to shore.

As a memorial for Daigle, a boogie board, a magnolia and painted sand dollars were placed under a green tent. Someone had written "Bless U" in the sand. Jamie was vacationing with friends while the rest of her family was home.

Meanwhile, there was a second shark attack Monday off Cape San Blas, some 80 miles away from Saturday's incident. This one involved a 16-year-old boy who was fishing in waist-deep water.

The shark bit his thigh, nearly severing his leg. A hospital spokeswoman said the boy is listed in critical condition, but has undergone surgery and is expected to be OK.

Beaches reopened Sunday with extra lifeguards along a stretch of the Florida Panhandle coast where the attack occurred. Coastal residents reported seeing at least one shark hunting fish close to shore.

Boy stable after 2nd Florida shark attack

Death of girl Saturday blamed on 6-foot bull shark

Monday, June 27, 2005; Posted: 5:50 p.m. EDT (21:50 GMT)

PANAMA CITY, Florida (CNN) -- A 16-year-old boy was bitten by a shark Monday in the Gulf of Mexico, two days after a shark killed a 14-year-old girl off the Florida Panhandle, authorities said.

Craig Adam Hutto of Lebanon, Tennessee, was fishing with his brother on a sandbar about 60 yards off Cape San Blas when he was bitten about 11:30 a.m. Monday, said Gulf County government spokeswoman Paula Pickett.

The boy was in stable condition with injuries to at least one of his legs, said Christa Hild, a spokeswoman for Bay Medical Center in Panama City.

He arrived shortly before noon and was listed in critical condition before undergoing surgery, she said earlier.

Hutto and his brother were fishing in waist-deep surf off the Gulf side of Cape San Blas, a narrow spit of land about 40 miles southeast of Panama City.

The boy was reeling in a fish when he was attacked, said Gulf County Sheriff Dalton Upchurch.

The boy's brother pulled him from the water, and two vacationing medical personnel administered first aid, Upchurch said.

The youth was taken to a nearby hospital and then flown by helicopter to Panama City, he said.

Chief Les Hallman of the South Walton Fire District told reporters the boys were using shrimp as bait.

"The victim was struck unexpectedly," he said. "They did not see the shark before the shark attacked."

Witnesses told WMBB reporter Kira Mathis that Hutto was "in and out of consciousness."

Cape San Blas is on St. Joseph Peninsula, about 95 miles southeast of Miramar Beach where 14-year-old Jamie Daigle from Louisiana was killed Saturday in a shark attack. Autopsy results indicate the girl fell victim to a 6-foot bull shark, officials said Monday. (Full story)

Beaches in that area were closed after the attack but reopened Sunday -- though many visitors shied away from the water.

Daigle died Saturday morning from bites on "the lower portions of her body" after being attacked while she and a friend were swimming about 200 yards from shore, according to a statement issued Sunday by the Walton County Sheriff's Office.

Deaths from unprovoked shark attacks are rare, according to statistics compiled by the International Shark Attack File.

Seven people were killed in shark attacks worldwide in 2004, including two in the United States. California and Hawaii each recorded one shark attack death last year.

There were 12 shark attacks on Florida beaches in 2004, down sharply from 30 in 2003. Experts credit the busy hurricane season in 2004 for the lower numbers.
